Kawakamikyo Gorge has long been appreciated as a scenic spot by the people of Saga. It is located at the foot of the mountain on the way from Saga City to Mitsuse and attracts tourists all year round. Cherry blossoms and about 600 Koinobori (carp streamers) which decorate the surface of the river are well-known spring features here. In summer, you can hear the cheerful voices of kids playing in the river surrounded by deep green. In fall, autumn leaves of mountains create a serene atmosphere. The surrounding area spotted with many tourist spots such as historic temples, shrines, Japanese gardens with seasonal flowers and gigantic stones on the hillside. Shiratama Manjuu (dumpling with sweet azuki bean paste filling) is the specialty of this area and makes a perfect souvenir. The dumpling is made from high quality rice-flour and filled with plain-sweet azuki bean jam. Many fans have and still do love its unchanging taste.
