Built back in the Edo Period (17th–19th century) in Hasuike area (current Yanagi-machi), the houses of the Morinaga Family, who was a renowned tobacco producer, consist of residential houses and storehouses, which are among the few remaining three-story storehouses from the time. The storehouses were used to store tobacco, which the founder of the Morinaga's tobacco company started producing in the Edo period by an order from the local feudal lord. “Fuji No Kemuri,” the tobacco brand produced by the Morinaga company, got a great reputation that the flavor was even better than Tengu, the tobacco brand then famous in Tokyo, and was favored by such important figures as Shigenobu Okuma. When the tobacco production was nationalized, the company switched their business to traditional kimono retailing and lasted until 1934. The storehouse was renovated after that and is today occupied by Kureha, the black tea store, and “Orimonogatari,” the shop providing traditional Nabeshima Dantsu carpet.
