Yutoku Inari Shrine

Hizen Hamashuku developed at the mouth of Hamagawa River and prospered as a post town on Tara Kaido Highway, the sub-road of Nagasaki Kaido highway, back in the Edo Period. The townscape in which many old sake breweries still remain is referred to as “Sakagura Dori (sake brewery avenue)” and was designated by the national government as a preservation area of important traditional architectures.

The refined sake has been made with the high-quality water from Mt. Tarayama and locally-grown rice are used. As a brewery with history of over 200 years, their motto is to find a guide into tomorrow by taking lessons fro the past. They are constantly trying on new products while keeping their rich traditions.

Yano Shuzou Co., Ltd.

The sacred sake is brewed near Yutoku Inari Shrine, one of the 3 greatest Inari shrines in Japan. It has been about 30 years since this sake brewery was open to show the process of sake-making. They are the first one in Kyushu to sell local-sake soft serve ice cream and the first in Japan to serve Doburoku (unrefined sake) ice cream. Not on the refined sake but also the plum wine made with sake is popular.

Sachihime Shuzou Co., Ltd.

This brewery is located in Nogomikyo area, which is often compared to a famous beautiful tourist spot called Yabakei. Surrounded by the beautiful nature, the brewery is producing sake from the rice delivered from a local contract farm. “Earning trust from customers” is the greatest goal of this small brewery.

Located in Kashima City Hama-machi's Hizen Hamashuku Avenue, distillery tours are available. Taste-test the Sake, Amazake, fruit liquors, and nonalcoholic beverages or try the pickled food. Make a reservation with a group of ten or more to receive a guided tour and take a peak in the retro, Showa-esque room in the back.

Hizenya / Minematsu Shuzo Co., Ltd.

The birthplace of the Kogyo Daishi Kakuban Shonin, the founder of the Shingi Shingon sect, who revived the Shingon sect and the beliefs of Mt. Koyasan. The temple attracts many worshipers as a temple of prayer and a temple of flowers. Inside the temple grounds, there's the largest burial mound in the prefecture, Onizuka Kofun, which is a designated historic site in Saga prefecture, and is open to the public.

Tanjoin Temple

The Ninja Village is a re-creation of the Nagasaki Kaido from the Edo Period. Ninjas are hiding throughout the village and visitors can try their hands at Shuriken and blow darts.
There's plenty to see with the Ninja Show, Daidougei (street performances), and others!

Ochachamura is located in the city where Ureshino tea was born which is at the foot of Mt. Fudosan by the former Nagasaki Kaido and the ruins of Tawarazaka checking station. In the middle of rich nature surrounded by a carpet of green tea garden, you can purchase freshly roasted green tea and black tea at factory prices while taking a look at the process of finishing green tea products.

Preservation District of Groups of Traditional Buildings "Shiotatsu, Ureshino City"

This museum used to be a factory to produce Hibachi brazier and platter. From the Taisho era to Showa Era, all of the process was done within this factory from clay processing to forming, painting, and firing, which was quite a rare case as a pottery factory. Loved by many people, the museum is designated as one of the Modern Industrial Heritage from The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, and also as Saga's Heritage.

Shida Pottery Museum

This spot is recommended for those who want to visit kilns but have no time to do so or who want to do some research before visiting kilns.
Items of 8 kilns and trading companies are displayed and sold here. You can also enjoy a pottery painting workshop from 800 yen (shipping fee excluded) and a pottery hand-shaping experience from 2,100 yen (over 2 Hours, reservation required).

Hizen Yoshidayaki Center

This large tea tree is a symbolic tree of Ureshino. It is aged well over 340 years old, 4.6 meters tall and has a crown of about 80 square meters.
This tree is said to be one of the trees planted around mid-17th century by Yoshimura Shinbe, the founder of Ureshino tea, and designated by the national government as an Important Natural Property.
The magnificent size of the tree crown implies the long history it has gone through.

This is where Hizen Yoshida Iroe, the colored porcelain, was started and their products are known for the warm texture and the Silk Road themed patterns. Recently, the silver-coated wares are added to its lineup.

Taniho Kiln

Hizen Kashima Higata is a Ramsar Convention-registered wetland. About 40 kinds of birds including sandpipers and plovers come flying here from fall to spring. Rare creatures such as mudskippers also inhabit here, which makes this place a perfect spot to observe a rich ecosystem.

Bougain House Ureshino opened in October, 2015, in the hot spring town of Ureshino as Japan’s largest botanical garden specializing in bougainvillea flowers. You can enjoy vividly colored bougainvillea flowers in red, yellow, purple and other colors all through the year. Especially notable here is the tunnel created with bougainvillea flowers all in full bloom. Bougainvillea-dye scarfs, dried bougainvillea flower pierced earrings and other original items are also available here.

The tidal range of Ariake Sea is 6 meters. At “Michi No Eki Kashima,” located by Japan’s largest tidal flat of the Ariake Sea, you can play around in the mudflat and enjoy riding a mudflat ski (Gata Ski). Showers are available for the attendants. Group application is welcome.

Apr-Nov: Tidal Flat Experience

Higashiyama Park located across the bridge from the main shrine site turns to an azalea garden featuring as many as 50 thousand azaleas. The beautiful view created by 40 kinds of azalea flowers is breathtaking. Wisteria, iris and peony at the Japanese garden will also be in their best time for viewing one after another and the park will be a paradise of flowers.

Apr-May: Azalea at Yutoku Inari Shrine

The Kashima Gatalympic is a sports event held in the mudflats in late May to early June. The mudflats of the Ariake Sea have the largest tidal range in Japan and participants play in the mud while participating in an array of fun events that are unique to this bizarre sporting spectacle, such as a Gata Ski race using a unique fishing gear of the Ariake Sea called Gata Ski, bicycle racing, Gata flying game and a treasure hunt in the mudflats. Although it is a free admission event, the participants of the games are required to register in advance (Fee applies).

May-Jun: Kashima Gatalympic

Ureshino that forms a basin has many firefly watching spots in the outskirts of the hot spring town. In Ureshino, you can join a bus tour which goes around those spots. The bus tour is only available to overnight guests at the hotels and inns in Ureshino. No participation fee is needed and you just need to make a reservation to join the tour.

It is an event held in Kashima-City, where the most number of traditional arts remain in Saga. Performers from all over Saga will gather on the grounds of Yutoku Inari Shrine to share various traditional arts such as Memburyu.

Sep: Kashima Traditional Arts Festival

Ohitaki is a traditional ritual held at night as a part of the ceremonial offering that has been performed for over 300 years. It is believed that getting close to the divine fire purifies you of sins and foulness. Kashima City's Specialty Fair is held on the same day to promote the city's specialty products.

Held every year during New Year's holidays, this traditional market has a history of over 300 years. People buy edible Crucian carp (Funa) here to serve it to the gods as New Year’s offering.

Hundreds of hand-made lanterns softly light up the streets of Ureshino Onsen. Enjoy the events, local dishes and sake while strolling around this warm and comforting town.

Miyuki Plum Garden, a part of the vast Miyuki Park, has about 400 plum trees including “Yaekoubai” and other plum variations gifted from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture.

6 sake breweries in Kashima City open their doors to public at the same time and hold various events where visitors can enjoy tasting and purchasing sake (fees are charged in some parts of the event). Welcoming events are held at Hizen Hamashuku and Yutoku Monzen Shopping Street.

Mar: Kashima Sakagura (Sake Brewery) Tourism

This Shingon sect temple is located in the Yoshida Saraya area of the city of pottery. It was built to pray for prosperity of pottery industry. Red aprons of some Jizo Bosatsu statues enshrined there, and colorful pinwheels create some impression in the quiet temple and make them look more vivid.
In Yoshiura Shrine located in the back, the god of pottery is enshrined.

Daijoji Temple / Yoshiura Shrine [Olle]

People have long worshipped “Gongensan” as the god of “water” to bring good harvest of grains in the Nishiyoshida Area. Next to the statue of Gongensan sit 12 Jizo Buddhist statues. This site with these statues makes one of the 88 pilgrimage spots in Ureshino and the statues sitting in front of a cliff of oddly-shaped rock surrounded by a mysterious atmosphere once attracted many Buddhist pilgrims.

Tea of Ureshino has received the highest awards five years in a row and the high quality is widely known. The shapes of the tea plantation in Ureshino town vary by areas and make unique scenery. The contrast between the tea plantation of Nishiyoshida area and fantastically shaped rocks and the view of Bozuhara pilot tea plantation as if large green cloth are sewed together are very attractive.

Todoroki No Taki Park [Olle]

This reservoir pond was created for farmland irrigation in 1625 and has the largest water storage capacity in Takeo Area. The surrounding area has been maintained as a rest spot for the locals and there is a hot spring facility available.

Feb - Mar　Yutoku Inari Shrine　Plum Blossoms of Japanese Garden

This shrine is one of Japan's three largest Inari Shrines (Sandai Inari) together with Fushimi Inari Shrine and Kasama Inari Shrine. The bright vermilion color of the monument is very impressive, and major monuments such as the shrine, the worship hall, the tower gate, etc. are lacquered. Cherry blossoms and Taiwan cherry blossoms in the outer garden are the spring traditions.

Yutoku Inari Shrine is one of Japan's three largest Inari Shrines (Sandai Inari). In autumn, red leaves not only dye the precincts in red, but also bring a different color to the Japanese garden.
